Finalists selected for new college mascot

Ten finalists have been selected in the search for a new mascot for the new Middle Georgia State College.

The new college is scheduled to be formed in January with the consolidation of Macon State College and Middle Georgia College. Students, faculty and staff of the two colleges, as well as the general public, were given the chance in June to recommend a new mascot, with nearly 800 entries submitted containing more than 300 different suggestions, ranging from Accomplishers and Airmen at one end of the alphabet to Zebras and Zombies at the other.

A group of senior administrators representing both colleges reviewed the suggestions and each person voted for 10. The result was a list of finalists that will be taken forward for additional consideration. The finalists are:

Aviators
Flying Tigers
Gladiators
Heat
Knights
Raptors
Ravens
Thrashers
Thunderbirds
Titans

The next step will be for a survey to be put together and sent out for students, faculty, staff and the general public to provide another round of input. The survey will list the 10 finalists and individuals will be asked their opinion as to which mascot should be selected. The results eventually will be turned over to a group of college and community citizens serving on the consolidation implementation committee. Members of that committee will choose the official mascot for Middle Georgia State College.

In the first phase of this process, suggestions also were sought for the new college’s colors. Those suggestions will be considered once the mascot has been selected. It is hoped that a mascot will be selected by September 1.

  1. Those are terrible. Flying Tigers? What in the world does that have to do with either school? Knights? Raptors? Do any of these suggestions possess a meaningful representation of MGSC? I really feel like all of these suggestions are poorly judged, and will have a negative impact on the new institution. Please don’t do this. May I please sit with the senior administrators we can do this all over again?

  2. I think Flying Tigers and Raptors are both excellent mascot ideas. It’s the age of the nerds, geeks, and dorks and we demand a mascot that shows our eccentricities better than any basic animal could. My vote is for Flying Tigers; man imagine how terrifying a flying tiger would even be?

  3. Seriously?? Flying Tiger??? Great. We will be the laughing stock of GA. This list does not represent either school properly. If anything, the Titans are the best pick out of this absurd list. Please do another vote!!!!!! I refuse to wear a shirt with a flying tiger on it!!!!

  4. Oh, flying tigers (visible dragon, anyone?). Remember, you all could have sent in suggestions. I couldn’t think of anything good, myself. I personally like Titans or Thunderbirds because of the mythos behind each. One of them will likely get my vote. But Raptors really has to be the best one on the list.

    Clever girl.

    • LOL! “Clever girl…” That’s exactly what I thought, too, when I heard it–Velociraptors!! But, no….raptors are actually “birds of prey” –carnivorous birds that feed wholly or chiefly on meat taken by hunting or on carrion. Thank goodness they didn’t get specific and suggest the “MGSC Vultures”!

    • I feel you poorly judge the status of Macon State College and Middle Georgia College… Both institutions can pride themselves on very different things and a merger may not be liked by students/faculty at MGC or Macon state but at the same time it opens opportunities that we may never have really thought of.

It is not a nightmare and I can assure you that Macon state has nothing to be saved from..

  5. Type “Flying Tigers” in to Google sometime or take a trip to the Air Museum in Warner Robins. You’ll find out that the Flying Tigers were a group of American volunteers that were flying aircraft in China to defend against the Japanese before WWII. It would be an honor to have a mascot that represents such a brave group of people.

  6. Of those nine options, only one addresses the distinctive identity of the new college: “The Aviators”. Macon State’s W.R. campus and MGC’s Aviation Campus in Eastman both have ties to aviation — the one thing that only we have and no other institution in the USG has. Also, it is a unique mascot name that no other college in the country uses. Go, Aviators!
